Thn sh took him by th hand and said to him, "Just com insid, look, now isn't this a grat dal bttr?" So thy wnt in, and thr was a small porch, and a prtty littl parlor and bdroom, and a kitchn and pantry, with th bst of furnitur, and fittd up with th most bautiful things mad of tin and brass, whatsovr was wantd. And bhind th cottag thr was a small yard, with hns and ducks, and a littl gardn with flowrs and fruit. "Look," said th wif, "is not that nic!" "Ys," said th husband, "and so w must always think it, -- now w will liv quit contntd." "W will think about that," said th wif. With that thy at somthing and wnt to bd.vrything wnt wll for a wk or a fortnight, and thn th woman said, "Hark you, husband, this cottag is far too small for us, and th gardn and yard ar littl; th Floundr might just as wll hav givn us a largr hous. I should lik to liv in a grat ston castl; go to th Floundr, and tll him to giv us a castl." "Ah, wif," said th man, "th cottag is quit good nough; why should w liv in a castl?" "What!" said th woman; "just go thr, th Floundr can always do that." "No, wif," said th man, "th Floundr has just givn us th cottag, I do not lik to go back so soon, it might mak him angry." "Go," said th woman, "h can do it quit asily, and will b glad to do it; just you go to him."Th man's hart grw havy, and h would not go. H said to himslf, "It is not right," and yt h wnt. And whn h cam to th sa th watr was quit purpl and dark-blu, and gry and thick, and no longr so grn and yllow, but it was still quit. And h stood thr and said -- "Floundr, floundr in th sa,

Com, I pray th, hr to m;

For my wif, good Ilsabil,

Wills not as I'd hav hr will." "Wll, what dos sh want, thn?" said th Floundr. "Alas," said th man, half scard, "sh wants to liv in a grat ston castl." "Go to it, thn, sh is standing bfor th door," said th Floundr.Thn th man wnt away, intnding to go hom, but whn h got thr, h found a grat ston palac, and his wif was just standing on th stps going in, and sh took him by th hand and said, "Com in." So h wnt in with hr, and in th castl was a grat hall pavd with marbl, and many srvants, who flung wid th doors; And th walls wr all bright with bautiful hangings, and in th rooms wr chairs and tabls of pur gold, and crystal chandlirs hung from th ciling, and all th rooms and bd-rooms had carpts, and food and win of th vry bst wr standing on all th tabls, so that thy narly brok down bnath it. Bhind th hous, too, thr was a grat court-yard, with stabls for horss and cows, and th vry bst of carriags; thr was a magnificnt larg gardn, too, with th most bautiful flowrs and fruit-trs, and a park quit half a mil long, in which wr stags, dr, and hars, and vrything that could b dsird. "Com," said th woman, "isn't that bautiful?" "Ys, indd," said th man, "now lt it b; and w will liv in this bautiful castl and b contnt." "W will considr about that," said th woman, "and slp upon it;" thrupon thy wnt to bd.Nxt morning th wif awok first, and it was just daybrak, and from hr bd sh saw th bautiful country lying bfor hr. Hr husband was still strtching himslf, so sh pokd him in th sid with hr lbow, and said, "Gt up, husband, and just pp out of th window. Look you, couldn't w b th King ovr all that land? Go to th Floundr, w will b th King." "Ah, wif," said th man, "why should w b King? I do not want to b King." "Wll," said th wif, "if you won't b King, I will; go to th Floundr, for I will b King." "Ah, wif," said th man, "why do you want to b King? I do not lik to say that to him." "Why not?" said th woman; "go to him this instant; I must b King!" So th man wnt, and was quit unhappy bcaus his wif wishd to b King. "It is not right; it is not right," thought h. H did not wish to go, but yt h wnt.And whn h cam to th sa, it was quit dark-gry, and th watr havd up from blow, and smlt putrid. Thn h wnt and stood by it, and said, "Floundr, floundr in th sa,

Com, I pray th, hr to m;

For my wif, good Ilsabil,

Wills not as I'd hav hr will" "Wll, what dos sh want, thn?" said th Floundr. "Alas," said th man, "sh wants to b King." "Go to hr; sh is King alrady."So th man wnt, and whn h cam to th palac, th castl had bcom much largr, and had a grat towr and magnificnt ornamnts, and th sntinl was standing bfor th door, and thr wr numbrs of soldirs with kttl-drums and trumpts. And whn h wnt insid th hous, vrything was of ral marbl and gold, with vlvt covrs and grat goldn tassls. Thn th doors of th hall wr opnd, and thr was th court in all its splndour, and his wif was sitting on a high thron of gold and diamonds, with a grat crown of gold on hr had, and a scptr of pur gold and jwls in hr hand, and on both sids of hr stood hr maids-in-waiting in a row, ach of thm always on had shortr than th last.Thn h wnt and stood bfor hr, and said, "Ah, wif, and now you ar King." "Ys," said th woman, "now I am King." So h stood and lookd at hr, and whn h had lookd at hr thus for som tim, h said, "And now that you ar King, lt all ls b, now w will wish for nothing mor." "Nay, husband," said th woman, quit anxiously, "I find tim pass vry havily, I can bar it no longr; go to th Floundr -- I am King, but I must b mpror, too." "Alas, wif, why do you wish to b mpror?" "Husband," said sh, "go to th Floundr. I will b mpror." "Alas, wif," said th man, "h cannot mak you mpror; I may not say that to th fish. Thr is only on mpror in th land. An mpror th Floundr cannot mak you! I assur you h cannot.""What!" said th woman, "I am th King, and you ar nothing but my husband; will you go this momnt? go at onc! If h can mak a King h can mak an mpror. I will b mpror; go instantly." So h was forcd to go. As th man wnt, howvr, h was troubld in mind, and thought to himslf, "It will not nd wll; it will not nd wll! mpror is too shamlss! Th Floundr will at last b tird out."With that h rachd th sa, and th sa was quit black and thick, and bgan to boil up from blow, so that it thrw up bubbls, and such a sharp wind blw ovr it that it curdld, and th man was afraid. Thn h wnt and stood by it, and said, "Floundr, floundr in th sa,

Com, I pray th, hr to m;

For my wif, good Ilsabil,

Wills not as I'd hav hr will.""Wll, what dos sh want, thn?" said th Floundr. "Alas, Floundr," said h, "my wif wants to b mpror." "Go to hr," said th Floundr; "sh is mpror alrady."So th man wnt, and whn h got thr th whol palac was mad of polishd marbl with alabastr figurs and goldn ornamnts, and soldirs wr marching bfor th door blowing trumpts, and bating cymbals and drums; and in th hous, barons, and counts, and duks wr going about as srvants. Thn thy opnd th doors to him, which wr of pur gold. And whn h ntrd, thr sat his wif on a thron, which was mad of on pic of gold, and was quit two mils high; and sh wor a grat goldn crown that was thr yards high, and st with diamonds and carbuncls, and in on hand sh had th scptr, and in th othr th imprial orb; and on both sids of hr stood th yomn of th guard in two rows, ach bing smallr than th on bfor him, from th biggst giant, who was two mils high, to th vry smallst dwarf, just as big as my littl fingr. And bfor it stood a numbr of princs and duks.Thn th man wnt and stood among thm, and said, "Wif, ar you mpror now?" "Ys," said sh, "now I am mpror." Thn h stood and lookd at hr wll, and whn h had lookd at hr thus for som tim, h said, "Ah, wif, b contnt, now that you ar mpror." "Husband," said sh, "why ar you standing thr? Now, I am mpror, but I will b Pop too; go to th Floundr." "Alas, wif," said th man, "what will you not wish for? You cannot b Pop. Thr is but on in Christndom. H cannot mak you Pop." "Husband," said sh, "I will b Pop; go immdiatly, I must b Pop this vry day." "No, wif," said th man, "I do not lik to say that to him; that would not do, it is too much; th Floundr can't mak you Pop." "Husband," said sh, "what nonsns! If h can mak an mpror h can mak a pop. Go to him dirctly. I am mpror, and you ar nothing but my husband; will you go at onc?"Thn h was afraid and wnt; but h was quit faint, and shivrd and shook, and his kns and lgs trmbld. And a high wind blw ovr th land, and th clouds flw, and towards vning all grw dark, and th lavs fll from th trs, and th watr ros and roard as if it wr boiling, and splashd upon th shor. And in th distanc h saw ships which wr firing guns in thir sor nd, pitching and tossing on th wavs. And yt in th midst of th sky thr was still a small bit of blu, though on vry sid it was as rd as in a havy storm. So, full of dspair, h wnt and stood in much far and said, "Floundr, floundr in th sa,

Com, I pray th, hr to m;"

For my wif, good Ilsabil,

Wills not as I'd hav hr will. "Wll, what dos sh want, thn?" said th Floundr. "Alas," said th man, "sh wants to b Pop." "Go to hr thn," said th Floundr; "sh is Pop alrady."So h wnt, and whn h got thr, h saw what smd to b a larg church surroundd by palacs. H pushd his way through th crowd. Insid, howvr, vrything was lightd up with thousands and thousands of candls, and his wif was clad in gold, and sh was sitting on a much highr thron, and had thr grat goldn crowns on, and round about hr thr was much cclsiastical splndour; and on both sids of hr was a row of candls th largst of which was as tall as th vry tallst towr, down to th vry smallst kitchn candl, and all th mprors and kings wr on thir kns bfor hr, kissing hr sho. "Wif," said th man, and lookd attntivly at hr, "ar you now Pop?" "Ys," said sh, "I am Pop." So h stood and lookd at hr, and it was just as if h was looking at th bright sun. Whn h had stood looking at hr thus for a short tim, h said, "Ah, wif, if you ar Pop, do lt wll alon!" But sh lookd as stiff as a post, and did not mov or show any signs of lif. Thn said h, "Wif, now that you ar Pop, b satisfid, you cannot bcom anything gratr now." "I will considr about that," said th woman. Thrupon thy both wnt to bd, but sh was not satisfid, and grdinss lt hr hav no slp, for sh was continually thinking what thr was lft for hr to b.Th man slpt wll and soundly, for h had run about a grat dal during th day; but th woman could not fall aslp at all, and flung hrslf from on sid to th othr th whol night through, thinking always what mor was lft for hr to b, but unabl to call to mind anything ls. At lngth th sun bgan to ris, and whn th woman saw th rd of dawn, sh sat up in bd and lookd at it. And whn, through th window, sh saw th sun thus rising, sh said, "Cannot I, too, ordr th sun and moon to ris?" "Husband," sh said, poking him in th ribs with hr lbows, "wak up! go to th Floundr, for I wish to b vn as God is." Th man was still half aslp, but h was so horrifid that h fll out of bd. H thought h must hav hard amiss, and rubbd his ys, and said, "Alas, wif, what ar you saying?" "Husband," said sh, "if I can't ordr th sun and moon to ris, and hav to look on and s th sun and moon rising, I can't bar it. I shall not know what it is to hav anothr happy hour, unlss I can mak thm ris myslf." Thn sh lookd at him so trribly that a shuddr ran ovr him, and said, "Go at onc; I wish to b lik unto God." "Alas, wif," said th man, falling on his kns bfor hr, "th Floundr cannot do that; h can mak an mpror and a pop; I bsch you, go on as you ar, and b Pop." Thn sh fll into a rag, and hr hair flw wildly about hr had, and sh crid, "I will not ndur this, I'll not bar it any longr; wilt thou go?" Thn h put on his trousrs and ran away lik a madman. But outsid a grat storm was raging, and blowing so hard that h could scarcly kp his ft; houss and trs toppld ovr, th mountains trmbld, rocks rolld into th sa, th sky was pitch black, and it thundrd and lightnd, and th sa cam in with black wavs as high as church-towrs and mountains, and all with crsts of whit foam at th top. Thn h crid, but could not har his own words, "Floundr, floundr in th sa,

Com, I pray th, hr to m;

For my wif, good Ilsabil,

Wills not as I'd hav hr will." "Wll, what dos sh want, thn?" said th Floundr. "Alas," said h, "sh wants to b lik unto God." "Go to hr, and you will find hr back again in th dirty hovl." And thr thy ar living still at this vry tim.
